This production presented several major challenges as a dramaturg, including understanding Mac Wellman’s strange, rich, wonderful language. With only five weeks to rehearse the play, Marcus Stern (who also directed the play’s premiere in 1994 at Primary Stages) decided to cut the play substantially. Sitting beside Wellman on opening night was one of the most harrowing experiences of my career. He was pleased with the cuts. As was I.
